The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has faulted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for questioning the integrity and performance of the Kano State Government, describing the opposition’s criticisms as lacking moral and political justification.
Reacting to recent accusations of mismanagement in the areas of education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure by the PDP, the NNPP dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.
At a press briefing earlier in the week, PDP State Chairman, Yusuf Kibiya, had accused the NNPP-led administration of betraying public trust and vowed to hold the government accountable for alleged misappropriation of funds.
However, in a counter statement, NNPP chairman in Kano State, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, said the PDP lacks the credibility to question the current administration’s policies or developmental strides.
“The PDP does not represent the conscience of Kano people, let alone question the financial transparency of this government. They had eight uninterrupted years to make an impact but left nothing substantial behind,” Dungurawa said.
He accused the previous administration under the PDP of embarking on white elephant projects that failed to address the needs of the people.
“Look at the underpass at Dangi. There was no significant traffic problem there. It was just a waste of public resources—mere concrete without functional value,” he stated.
In contrast, Dungurawa highlighted the NNPP government’s achievements under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, including the rehabilitation of key roads, construction of functional overpasses, and improvements in traffic infrastructure.
“Today, our roads are smooth and pothole-free. Road markings are clear, streetlights are operational, and we have modern gantries and signage. This is what true governance looks like,” he said.
Dungurawa also pointed to the government’s efforts in addressing pension liabilities, revealing that over N27 billion has been paid from the N48 billion debt inherited from the previous administration.
“We’ve already paid N22 billion and will disburse an additional N5 billion in December. This shows our commitment to the welfare of our retirees and financial responsibility,” he added.
On the PDP’s claims of political resurgence, Dungurawa dismissed them as hollow and disconnected from grassroots realities.
“Even in their own constituencies, some of these opposition leaders have lost relevance. PDP is not bouncing back; it’s bouncing out of political significance. Their leadership is fragmented and self-serving,” he said.
He also dismissed speculation around 2027 presidential ambitions, stating that such discussions are premature.
“No serious political party will declare a presidential candidate before INEC releases the election timetable. Right now, we are focused on governance, not speculation,” Dungurawa stated.
The NNPP chairman further criticized ongoing talks of opposition alliances, such as the recent coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing them as desperate moves by parties struggling with internal disunity.
“These so-called coalitions are symptoms of PDP’s own failures. They are not driven by ideology or the people’s interests, just survival tactics,” he concluded.
