The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Turaki has refuted claims that it directed members to pay ₦10,000 each to fund party activities.
In a statement on Sunday, PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong explained that his earlier remarks were misrepresented. He said his reference to ₦10,000 was only an illustration of how voluntary contributions could sustain the party, not a compulsory levy.
“The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice,” Ememobong recalled.
He added: “For example, if 60 million Nigerians each give ₦10,000, that’s a huge sum. We are already seeing this kind of mass support in states like Plateau and Akwa Ibom.”
Ememobong stressed that the PDP is returning to a voluntary funding model and clarified: “There is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP.”
The party urged members and the public to disregard the misleading report and continue supporting the PDP in voluntary ways they consider appropriate.
