Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned opposition supporters against verbal attacks on former presidential candidate Peter Obi, warning that such actions weaken opposition unity and harm Nigeria’s democratic progress.
In a post on X Tuesday, Atiku said insults directed at either himself or Obi undermine the Coalition ADC and play into the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the Coalition ADC and for Nigeria and Nigerians,” he wrote.
He argued that internal divisions only benefit the APC, which he described as the main beneficiary of opposition infighting.
“The only persons who benefit from such a civil war are the APC urban bandits who want to maintain the satanic status quo,” Atiku added.
His comments followed accusations that some of his supporters have unfairly targeted Obi, potentially deepening cracks within the fragile coalition.
The coalition, operating under the ADC banner, has gained momentum through high-profile defections aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Obi joined the ADC in December 2025 after leaving the Labour Party, citing the need for a stronger opposition platform. Atiku had defected a month earlier, framing his move as part of a mission to “rescue Nigeria.”
Atiku stressed that unity and cooperation among opposition leaders and their supporters remain essential to advancing national development and democratic progress.
