FIFA has approved a normalisation committee to run the Nigeria Football Federation until fresh Executive Committee elections are held, Complete Sports reported on 22 October, a change that sits over the Super Eagles’ November AFCON qualifiers.

The letter was signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and addressed to the NFF’s acting general secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, according to the report.

Members of the committee will not be allowed to stand for any position in the coming NFF elections. FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will appoint them jointly as soon as possible, and the committee’s mandate runs no later than 31 May 2027.

Who runs the NFF in the meantime

Until the committee is formally in place, the NFF Secretariat continues to handle day-to-day operations. That means the federation’s routine business carries on while FIFA and CAF decide who sits on the new body.

Analysis: what it could mean for the Eagles

The rules around the committee draw a clear line. Those who run the interim period cannot contest the vote that follows, which separates the people managing the transition from the people competing for power.

For the Super Eagles, the practical question is timing. The two Tanzania qualifiers in November, which Soccernet has explained as the key to Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 hopes, could fall inside the stretch when the Secretariat is still handling day-to-day matters, if the committee has not been named by then.

Practical calls such as the home-venue question Soccernet examined when the NFF stuck with Uyo for now are the sort of day-to-day matters that fall to the Secretariat. How quickly FIFA and CAF name the committee will decide how much of that work moves to the new body.

The first thing to watch is the appointment of the committee’s members by FIFA and CAF.
