Ondo State politician, Simisola Fajemirokun-Ajayi

House of Representatives aspirant, Simisola Fajemirokun-Ajayi, has called on political leaders across Nigeria to embrace inclusive governance, accountability and service to the people as the nation commemorates Democracy Day.

The APC aspirant for Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo/Odigbo Federal Constituency in Ondo State, in a statement argued that the essence of democracy lies in creating opportunities for all citizens, particularly market women, youths, farmers, artisans, teachers and entrepreneurs whose livelihoods and aspirations depend on responsive leadership.

She commended Nigerians for their resilience and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, noting that the country’s democratic journey has been sustained by citizens’ active participation in governance and their continued demand for accountability from elected officials.

Fajemirokun-Ajayi also lauded residents of Ile-Oluji, Oke-Igbo and Odigbo Federal Constituency for their dedication to democratic values, stressing that sustainable development is achieved when citizens are actively involved in shaping the future of their communities.

Her call comes against the backdrop of concerns over the low representation of women in Nigeria’s political leadership. Despite constituting nearly half of the country’s population, women remain significantly underrepresented in elective and appointive positions.

The current National Assembly has one of the lowest percentages of female lawmakers in recent democratic history, while efforts to secure greater gender inclusion through constitutional and legislative reforms have faced challenges.

Stakeholders have repeatedly argued that increasing women’s participation in governance is essential to strengthening democracy, broadening representation and ensuring that public policies reflect the interests of all segments of society.

According to Fajemirokun-Ajayi, Nigeria’s progress depends on leadership that promotes inclusion, equal opportunities and policies that improve the welfare of the people, regardless of gender, age or social status.

She further prayed for peace, prosperity and continued development in the constituency, Ondo State and the nation as a whole.
