Stanley Nwabali’s admission that he currently has “no contract in front” and “no club in front” has thrown Nigeria’s goalkeeping situation into fresh focus ahead of the Super Eagles’ upcoming fixtures.

Soccernet.ng earlier reported that Jordan and Portugal, in preparation for their upcoming 2026 World Cup tournament, will tackle the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The former Chippa United goalkeeper recently confirmed he is a free agent and not guaranteed a move, which has raised questions about his match sharpness going into the game.

With Nwabali without a club and yet to secure regular football since leaving Chippa United, attention has shifted to other options in the squad, like Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.

One of the names increasingly being discussed is former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, whose recent form in England has strengthened his case for international involvement.

Stanley Nwabali’s clubless status raises selection questions

Nwabali has insisted he is not desperate to rush into a deal and will only sign for a club that suits both him and his agent.

However, his lack of competitive action contrasts sharply with the demands of international football, especially with Nigeria preparing for a test against Jordan and later against Portugal.

The Super Eagles shot-stopper recently explained that his exit from Chippa United was a mutual decision taken in good faith by both parties, but admitted there are no offers on the table yet.

That situation could weigh heavily on the technical crew, particularly if match fitness becomes a deciding factor.

Okonkwo’s form boosts his chances

In contrast, Okonkwo has been making headlines for his performances in the FA Cup, helping Wrexham progress with crucial saves and clean sheets.

The London-born goalkeeper, who recently switched allegiance to Nigeria after previously representing England at the youth level, is viewed as a strong competitor in the race for the number-one jersey.

With Nwabali still searching for a club and Okonkwo and Okoye enjoying regular football, the balance may be tilting in favour of the ex-Arsenal and Udinese players ahead of the Jordan clash.
