Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has urged Nigerians to demonstrate a stronger commitment to the fight against insecurity.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, in Sokoto yesterday, the governor described insecurity as one of the greatest obstacles to the nation’s progress.

Aliyu implored citizens to emulate the virtues of the country’s founding fathers, whom he praised for their sacrifice and patriotism.

“Our founding fathers saw themselves first as Nigerians before anything else, and that was why they succeeded in building a strong, indivisible nation,” he said.

He also paid tribute to the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and other nationalists, describing them as exemplary leaders who laid the foundation for a united Nigeria.

Aliyu stated that banditry and other forms of criminality have continued to undermine the country’s socio-economic and political development.

He stressed the need for a united front in tackling the menace.

RELATEDLY, the former state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has called on Nigerians to embrace renewal, courage, and selfless service as the nation marks its 65th nationhood anniversary.

He said democracy in Nigeria, though imperfect, can evolve into “the pride of Africa and a beacon to the world” with sacrifice and commitment.

In a goodwill message, Tambuwal described Nigeria as a country that has weathered storms that could have broken other nations, standing today as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the unyielding spirit of its people.

He also stressed that the country’s diversity is its greatest asset, and its youth the most valuable resource.

Tambuwal, however, noted that the nation’s democracy remains unfinished, with institutions still in need of strengthening, and unity constantly under strain.

The former governor expressed concern over the plight of millions of young Nigerians who remain trapped in poverty instead of driving innovation and prosperity, an outcome he said falls short of the vision of the country’s founding fathers.
