The Yobe State Government has declared Tuesday as public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448AH.
The announcement followed approval from Governor Mai Mala Buni, in acknowledgement of the importance of the Islamic calendar and the state’s longstanding practice of observing the start of the Hijrah year.
This was contained in a circular issued on Monday and signed by the Head of Service, Abdullahi Shehu.
According to the circular, the holiday is intended to allow workers and residents across the state to observe the first day of Muharram, which marks the start of the Islamic New Year.
“His Excellency Mai Mala Buni has graciously approved the declaration of Tuesday, 16th June, 2026 (1st Muharram, 1448AH), as a public holiday across the state to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year,” the circular stated.
The state government further instructed all civil servants, public institutions, and other organisations to adhere strictly to the holiday directive.
“Accordingly, government offices, institutions, and other public establishments are expected to observe the holiday. Normal official activities and work will resume on Wednesday, 17th June, 2026,” it added.
Residents of the state were also encouraged by the government to use the occasion to reflect and offer prayers for peace, stability, and prosperity as the new Islamic year begins.
“The government wishes all Muslim faithful and residents a peaceful, prosperous, and blessed Islamic New Year,” the statement added.
The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah, marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah, and signifies the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar observed by Muslims worldwide.
