WAFU B: 2 ways Côte d’Ivoire coach plans to beat Flying Eagles

Ivory Coast U-20 coach Oussou Israël has fired an early warning to Nigeria’s Flying Eagles ahead of today’s blockbuster semi-final at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship, Soccernet.ng reports.

The hosts head into the last-four encounter in a confident mood after topping Group A with a perfect record, scoring seven goals without conceding, while Nigeria finished second in Group B following a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final group match.

Despite the Flying Eagles’ rich history, Israël believes his players have what it takes to overcome seven-time U-20 Africa Cup of Nations champions.

“Of course, we have confidence, but our confidence is based on the collective,” the former FC Mouna coach said in quotes revealed by Sport Ivoire.

“We have a good collective, and tactically, I think the boys are recovering well. They are adapting to the different adversities and the different game problems our opponents pose to us.”

The Ivorian tactician added that his side’s tactical flexibility gives them every reason to believe they can compete with Nigeria.

“If we stay like this in this tactical dynamic and adaptation, we have the possibility of playing a good match against this Nigerian team. We are ready for this match.”

WAFU B: Flying Eagles face toughest test yet

Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals after impressive victories over Ghana and Togo before suffering their first setback of the tournament against Burkina Faso.

Coach Abdul Maikaba’s side defeated Ghana 4-2 in their opening fixture before easing past Togo 3-0 to seal qualification with a game to spare.

However, a much-changed Flying Eagles side were beaten 2-0 by Burkina Faso in their final Group B fixture, allowing the Young Stallions to leapfrog Nigeria into first place.

That result handed the Flying Eagles the toughest possible semi-final assignment against unbeaten hosts Ivory Coast.

The Ivorians have looked one of the tournament’s standout sides, thrashing Benin Republic 5-0 before defeating Niger 2-0 to finish top of Group A with six points, seven goals scored and none conceded.

AFCON ticket on the line

Wednesday’s clash at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro carries huge weight beyond a place in the final. The winners will qualify automatically for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

While Ivory Coast will draw confidence from home support and an unbeaten tournament record, Nigeria boast a superior history at this level, having won a record seven U-20 AFCON titles.

The Flying Eagles have also enjoyed the upper hand against the Young Elephants in previous youth meetings, giving Maikaba’s side added belief despite their defeat to Burkina Faso.

With continental qualification and regional bragging rights at stake, both sides are expected to fight tooth and nail for a place at the U-20 AFCON tournament in Ghana.
