The proposed friendly match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Iran, slated to be held later this month, has been placed under uncertainty, Soccernet.ng reports.

The clash slated to open the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Amman later this month has run into uncertainty following the deepening crisis surrounding Iran and growing doubts over its international commitments.

Nigeria were due to face Iran on 27 March at the Amman International Stadium, before taking on hosts Jordan on 31 March as part of the mini-tournament also involving Costa Rica.

However, the fixture against Iran is now in doubt amid rising political and security tensions involving the Middle Eastern nation.

The situation follows recent military escalation involving Iran and Western allies, which has raised concerns about the country’s ability to honour international sporting engagements in the current window.

Iran World Cup participation in doubt

Iran’s football federation president has publicly admitted that the country’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is uncertain due to the ongoing crisis, per ESPN.

Iran had already secured qualification for the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, but officials say the security situation and diplomatic challenges could prevent the team from travelling or preparing normally.

The uncertainty has prompted FIFA to closely monitor developments, with contingency plans reportedly being considered should Iran be forced to withdraw from international competitions.

Reports indicate that other Asian nations could be lined up as possible replacements if Iran pulls out of future fixtures.

Impact on Super Eagles’ preparations

The uncertainty surrounding Iran’s status has now spilt over into Nigeria’s preparations for the March international window.

The Super Eagles were expected to use the match as a key warm-up fixture ahead of upcoming competitive assignments, but the unresolved situation has placed the encounter in limbo.

Organisers of the Four-Nation Tournament are yet to issue an official update on whether the match will go ahead as scheduled, while the Nigeria Football Federation has also not made a formal statement.

For now, Nigeria’s clash with Jordan remains on the programme, but the fate of the opening match against Iran depends on how quickly clarity emerges from Tehran and football’s governing authorities.
