The Nigerian Senate has dismissed reports suggesting plans to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the claims as false and intended to create confusion.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate, the Senate Leader clarified that no discussions or moves toward Akpabio’s impeachment had taken place.
He explained that remarks attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu were taken out of context, adding that his discussions with Kalu confirmed the alleged statement was misrepresented.
“From my discussions with Senator Kalu, it was obvious that the statement attributed to him was misrepresented,” he said.
The Senate Leader warned that such misinformation was capable of distracting lawmakers from urgent national issues. He stressed that senators remained united behind Akpabio’s leadership and had adopted a “zero-tolerance” approach to distractions.
“There is no tension in this Senate. We are focused on delivering for Nigerians, and we will not allow rumours to derail our work,” he added.
The clarification was officially noted during plenary, as lawmakers reaffirmed their confidence and solidarity with the Senate leadership. The chamber’s firm response was widely seen as a clear message against attempts to sow disunity or political instability within the legislature.
The lawmaker representing the Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on Monday said that there was an attempt to impeach Akpabio.
Kalu, who spoke on Tuesday, while addressing newsmen about US concerns over attacks on Christians in Nigeria and Trump’s warning of possible military action, however, said the plot was thwarted.
According to the former governor of Abia State, the attempt was birthed by what he described as “family misunderstanding.”
“There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen”, Senator Kalu stated.
On the nation’s economy, Kalu acknowledged ongoing hardship but maintained that macroeconomic indicators are improving.
“As a businessman, I am feeling the pain too. The macro economy is doing well, but the micro economy is not. Foreign investors are coming in. What is left is for this progress to trickle down so people can eat daily and return to farming.”
The lawmaker stated that both the President and the Senate are working relentlessly to revive the economy and ensure food security.
Responding to a question about the political future of Anambra State governor Chukwuma Soludo, Kalu said, “I think after all the court cases, he is a progressive like myself, President Tinubu, and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as well as the governors of Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and other APC governors. So, Soludo is a progressive.
“I don’t see anything wrong with him joining us. In fact, it is confirmed that he will join the APC. He has no other alternative than to come and join us.”
Kalu also expressed confidence that President Tinubu would secure a second term of office, declaring that the president currently has no real opposition.
