Rivers United and Enugu Rangers are level on 17 points at the top of the NPFL after Matchday 9, with Rivers United held 0-0 by Barau FC at home.

Rangers have played one game fewer than Rivers United, according to the Nigerian Matchday table, so they can take sole top spot with a win in hand. That page shows Sporting Lagos third on 15 points, with Plateau United, Barau FC and Nasarawa United on 14.

Sporting Lagos win a five-goal thriller at Plateau

Sporting Lagos won 3-2 at Plateau United on Sunday 18 October, a result that lifted them into third place. Niger Tornadoes beat Ikorodu City 2-1 and Kano Pillars edged Katsina United 1-0 the same day.

Nasarawa United won 2-0 at Inter Lagos, and Enyimba drew 0-0 at home to Warri Wolves.

Friday and Saturday results

Shooting Stars beat Ranchers Bees 3-1 on Friday 16 October. On Saturday, Doma United and Kun Khalifat drew 1-1, as did Kwara United and Abia Warriors.

Soccernet could not check the table against the league’s own page, so the standings above are as reported by Nigerian Matchday.

Several Super Eagles call-ups come from the league, as Soccernet reported in 2 NPFL stars lead charge as Nigeria’s camp opens.

Analysis: a tight top six with a game in hand

Level points rarely tell the whole story, and here the extra game matters. Rangers have eight matches played to Rivers United’s nine, so a win takes them clear while Rivers United can only hold their position.

Behind them the margins are tiny: third-placed Sporting Lagos have 15 points, and Plateau United, Barau FC and Nasarawa United sit on 14. Three points separate the top six, so one weekend can reshuffle the order.

Matchday 10 will show whether Rivers United or Rangers can break the deadlock at the top.
