Sunday, October 18

Winless Tottenham Hotspur host Coventry City in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, October 19, 2026, with kickoff at 20:00 WAT, and the visitors arrive having won their last two league games after losing their first four.

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is back in Frank Lampard’s squad after a three-match ban, and he is predicted to lead the line against a Tottenham defence that has conceded nine goals in six league games. His return matters because Coventry won at Nottingham Forest and against Newcastle United while he was suspended, so Lampard has to decide how much of a winning attack to change.

Awoniyi is not the only Super Eagles player in the visiting squad, because midfielder Frank Onyeka is also at Coventry and is predicted to start in the middle of the park.

Tottenham vs Coventry City: Form Guide

Tottenham have yet to win in the league this season, drawing at Nottingham Forest, at home to Everton and at Manchester United, and losing to Brentford, Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Their attack has produced only three goals in six games, one each from Jan Paul van Hecke, Dominic Solanke and Conor Gallagher, and the two clean sheets came in the goalless draws.

Home form has offered little comfort, with defeats by Newcastle (0-2) and Villa (2-3) either side of a goalless draw against Everton leaving Tottenham with two goals in three league games at their own ground.

The latest result was a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on October 10, a game in which Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off, and the suspension that followed rules him out of this one.

Coventry lost their first four league games without scoring, conceding 10 goals against Arsenal, Hull City, Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion.

The turnaround began with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, and Coventry then beat Newcastle 4-1 on October 12 through goals from Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni. That was Coventry’s first home win of the season, and it leaves them 15th with six points, three more than Tottenham in 20th.

Their away record is the weaker side of the picture, with a single goal in three league trips, scored in the 1-0 win at Forest after goalless defeats at Arsenal and Manchester City. Six games is a small sample, but the pattern is consistent, because both sides concede freely, with Tottenham letting in nine and Coventry 11.

The clubs have met 92 times in all competitions, with Tottenham winning 44, Coventry 26 and 22 ending level. Tottenham’s record as the home side stands at 26 wins, 10 draws and nine defeats from 45 meetings, so Coventry have won only one in five visits.

The last meeting was a Carabao Cup third-round tie at Coventry on September 18, 2024, which Tottenham won 2-1, and they have won all of the last five matches between the sides, scoring 13 goals to one.

That run is background rather than a guide, because the last league meeting was a 3-0 Tottenham win on March 17, 2001, and Coventry’s most recent league victory over Tottenham came on October 14, 2000.

The sides’ best-known meeting is the 1987 FA Cup final, which Coventry won, and it remains their only meeting at a neutral venue.

Key battles in Tottenham vs Coventry City

Awoniyi has played four league games for Coventry since leaving Nottingham Forest in the summer without scoring, so Monday gives him a chance to open his league account. He has missed the last three games due to a red card he got on September 13 against Brighton.

Across from him are van Hecke and Micky van de Ven, who is expected to return in place of Marcos Senesi, the centre-back who started at Old Trafford.

Tottenham have kept a clean sheet only in their two goalless draws, so Coventry do not need Awoniyi to overpower his markers, only to hold the ball long enough for Rudoni and Ephron Mason-Clark to arrive behind him.

Lampard’s alternative is Cherif, who won a penalty and scored in the win over Newcastle, which makes a first goal for Awoniyi a selection argument as much as a personal milestone.

Solanke against Coventry’s back three

Solanke, the England striker whose father is of Nigerian descent, has one league goal this season, a header in stoppage time that rescued a point at Old Trafford.

That header came from a cross by Sandro Tonali, who is expected to start in midfield again, so Solanke has a supplier he has already scored from.

Coventry are predicted to switch to a back three of Mfuni, Bobby Thomas and Ethan Pinnock, after using a back four against Newcastle. The Sky Blues have conceded 11 league goals and kept one clean sheet, so the new back line has little record to lean on.

Tottenham vs Coventry team news and predicted lineups

Tottenham team news

Bentancur serves the first of three matches after his red card, and Lucas Bergvall, Savio, Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mykhailo Mudryk are also unavailable.

Dejan Kulusevski, who is in the final phase of recovery from a knee injury, and Andrew Robertson are doubts, and Archie Gray is again expected at right-back in Porro’s absence.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Gray, van Hecke, van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali; Kudus, Gallagher, Marmoush; Solanke.

Coventry team news

Aurele Amenda (calf), Luke Woolfenden (knee), Josh Eccles (ankle) and Haji Wright (thigh) are out, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, is a doubt.

Lampard has confirmed that Awoniyi is available after serving his ban, saying Coventry signed him “for a reason”.

Onyeka came off the bench late in the win over Newcastle and is predicted to start in midfield alongside Matt Grimes, with Caleb Yirenkyi making way.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Rushworth; Mfuni, Thomas, Pinnock; van Ewijk, Grimes, Onyeka, Dasilva; Rudoni, Mason-Clark; Awoniyi.

Éric Chelle called Awoniyi into the Super Eagles squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September, after Victor Osimhen was ruled out by injury.

Nigeria beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on September 25 and lost 3-0 at Guinea-Bissau four days later, which leaves them second in Group L on three points, three behind Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria play Tanzania home and away in November, and Awoniyi competes for a place with Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare and George Ilenikhena, who scored both goals against Madagascar.

A first league goal for Coventry would therefore help his case, because it would give Chelle recent evidence in a position where the competition is close.

Onyeka, who joined Coventry permanently in the summer after a loan spell, had 45 Nigeria caps by June, and Chelle included him in his plans for the September qualifiers.

Minutes have been the issue for him at club level, since he came off the bench against Newcastle and, in the Carabao Cup, against Aston Villa, so a start at Tottenham would give Chelle fresher evidence.

Tottenham vs Coventry prediction

The Verdict
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Coventry City
Tottenham have drawn half of their league games and Coventry have scored once in three away matches, so neither attack has shown it can dominate. Awoniyi gives Coventry a focal point against a defence that leaks goals, while Solanke has already scored from a Tonali cross. Likely scorers: Solanke, Awoniyi.
