Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has approved a restructuring of the state’s security architecture, appointing retired Brig.-Gen. Nash Yakubu as the Coordinator of Operation Rainbow, the state-owned security outfit.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau.
According to the statement, Yakubu retired from the Nigerian Army after 35 years of service, during which he participated in several local and international operations.
“His service record includes participation in operations linked to the MASSOB and IPOB crises, peacekeeping assignments in Sierra Leone and Sudan, as well as deployments in Nigeria’s North-East,” the statement read.
The governor also redeployed the Acting Coordinator of Operation Rainbow, retired Brig.-Gen. Gakji Shipi Goshwe, as Coordinator of the Safe School Programme.
Until his redeployment, Goshwe also served as the governor’s Special Adviser on Security.
In a related development, Mutfwang appointed retired Maj.-Gen. Bala A. Isandu as Special Adviser on Security.
The statement said Isandu previously served as Senior Special Assistant on Intelligence to the Minister of Defence and also held leadership positions at the Defence Intelligence Agency.
According to the government, the appointments take immediate effect and are aimed at strengthening the state’s security framework, enhancing the protection of lives and property, and reinforcing safety measures in schools.
Mutfwang congratulated the appointees and urged them to deploy their experience and professionalism in advancing his administration’s vision of a peaceful, secure and prosperous Plateau State.
Plateau has remained one of Nigeria’s major insecurity flashpoints, with recurring attacks and reprisal killings in several communities, particularly in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Riyom and Bassa local government areas.
The violence has left hundreds dead and displaced thousands of residents in recent years.
