The Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria has called on parents to give their female children the same level of training and opportunities accorded to their male children, especially in education and skill development.

Speaking on Sunday at the 34th FOMWAN Youth Camp in Akure, Ondo State, the South-West Zonal Coordinator of the association, Alhaja Sariyu Olaoye, said women are also nation builders if given equal opportunities.

The camp, themed “Empowered Voices, Greener Choices”, began on Friday and was hosted by the Ondo State chapter of FOMWAN.

Olaoye explained that the programme was designed to empower youths, particularly young women, to become responsible and productive citizens.

She said, “We want to bring our youth to the limelight. For them to know the needful that they have to learn from the elders, and this will help them to become better citizens in the society, be useful to themselves, as well as to the state, the nation, as well. That’s the reason for the programme, to ensure that our girls are mainly better equipped and useful in society.

“Again, you know, in our Quran, it was well stated that when you train a girl child, you train a nation. So by doing so, they will be useful to their husbands, as well as the community in which they find themselves. They will be fully empowered so that society will enjoy them and appreciate them in the near future. They will not only be useful to themselves, they will be useful to wherever they find themselves.

“So I want to use this opportunity to implore our parents to also invest in their female children. They should not only train male children, they should train female too. Training of female children is not a loss, because women are nation builders.”

The Ondo State President of FOMWAN, Alhaja Medinat Omikunle, explained that the youth camp is an annual programme focused on training young women to be virtuous and impactful members of society.

Also speaking, the Chief Imam of Akure, Abdulhakeem Yayi-Akorede, praised FOMWAN for the initiative and urged women to continue supporting men in nation-building efforts.
