An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Gombe State, Mr Clement Yunana, a 50-year-old officer attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga, Gombe State, was killed when he was hit by a vehicle on Wednesday.
The accident occurred around 5 pm near the Matrix Filling Station in Tumfure area of the state capital.
According to eyewitnesses, ASP Yunana was attempting to cross the road when an unidentified vehicle heading towards Gombe metropolis knocked him down.
The police spokesperson of the Gombe State Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, in a press release on Friday, said the driver who hit the police officer fled the scene without stopping or offering assistance to the victim.
He added that the police man was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was pronounced dead around 6:50 p.m. on the same day.
However, the police spokesperson noted that the remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy.
Abdullahi further said that the state police command has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident and is working to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.
“The police are appealing to the public for any information that will aid in identifying the vehicle involved in the fatal accident,” he pleaded.
