Obstetricians and gynaecologists across West Africa are set to deliberate on reproductive health challenges, including gynaecological cancers, infectious diseases, family planning and assisted reproduction, at a regional congress in Lagos.
The fifth congress of the Association of West African Societies of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the West African College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists will hold from September 2 to 5, 2026, at the Festival Hotel Conference Center and Spa, Janet Fagbemisan Street, Diamond Estate, Amuwo Odofin, Mile 2, Lagos.
The congress is themed “Reproductive Health Innovations and Equity in the West African Sub-region.”
The sub-themes include exploring genomics in reproductive disorders, assisted reproduction and ethics, gender-responsive sexual and reproductive health rights, combating infectious diseases in obstetrics practice, family planning and development, and management challenges associated with gynaecological cancers.
In his welcome message contained in the congress brochure, the President of AWASOG/WACOG, Emeritus Prof J.I. Brian-D Adinma, said the theme and sub-themes were in tandem with contemporary global reproductive health challenges affecting the West African sub-region.
“Guest and paper presentations related to this theme and sub-themes promised to be very interesting and will with no doubt widen the knowledge-base and enrich the knowledge-content of the participant at the congress,” Adinma said.
The president recalled that AWASOG was formally inaugurated in Abuja on February 17, 2020, as an umbrella body for practising obstetricians and gynaecologists as well as obstetrics and gynaecology societies across the West African sub-region.
He said the association was established to promote, protect and uphold the reproductive health and sexual and reproductive rights of women in the sub-region.
Adinma further disclosed that the college arm of the association was formally inaugurated in Lagos in 2024 and had since inducted nearly 200 fellows.
He added that the college had also established the West African Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and was gradually implementing the provisions of its strategic development framework.
The congress will also feature exhibitions from notable drug companies and agencies and provide opportunities for networking among participants.
“The congress will also parade an array of exhibitions from notable Drug companies and Agencies and provide the necessary environment for networking amongst the congress participants,” Adinma said.
AWASOG president urged every fellow to attend and encourage other colleagues to register and get inducted into the college.
