Sunday, November 30

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has mourned the death of former Osun All Progressives Congress chairman and the embattled 30th Owa of Igbajo, Adegboyega Famodun, who died at the age of 67 after a brief illness.

PUNCH Online reports that Famodun was installed as monarch in 2022 at the twilight of the administration of Adegboyega Oyetola, but was later removed through an executive order issued by Governor Adeleke, who appointed Oba Ademola Makinde in his place.

However, in January 2025, the Osun State High Court reinstated Oba Famodun, a decision that is currently being challenged on appeal.

Adeleke, in a statement signed on Sunday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, extended condolences to Famodun’s family, the opposition party, and the people of Igbajo.

The governor recalled the late politician’s long years of association with the Adeleke family, describing him as a politician of note who contributed his own quota to the political development of Osun State.

“On behalf of the government and people of Osun State, I condole the family of our late brother, Adegboyega Famodun. I got the shocking news as I was arriving in the country today.

“Our late brother was a close family friend. We mourn his sudden death. We join the family in this grieving period. I pray his soul rest in perfect peace,” the governor was quoted as saying.

The Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo in Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State earlier confirmed Famodun’s death.

A statement signed by Prince Adekunle Famodun on behalf of the family and obtained in Osogbo on Sunday said he “passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a brief illness.”

The family added that Famodun was married and survived by children.

They noted that “although his position was disputed by a white paper issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State High Court reinstated him on January 30, 2025.

“During his reign, Oba Famodun worked tirelessly to unite the people of Igbajoland, promoting peace, understanding, and progress.

“His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on the community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. He will be remembered for his peaceful nature, exceptional wisdom, and tireless efforts to promote community development.”
