Spanish footballer Pedro Rodríguez has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a decorated career that saw him win major honours with Barcelona, Chelsea and the Spain national team.
The former Barcelona forward shared the announcement in an emotional message on his X handle on Wednesday, saying he felt the time had come to begin a new chapter in his life.
“I feel that the time has come.
“The time to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” Pedro said.
Reflecting on his career, the Spaniard said he was proud to have fulfilled his childhood dream and grateful to everyone who supported him along the way.
“I leave proud of having lived my dream and of all the people who were by my side to make it come true,” he said.
Pedro thanked the sport for the happiness and memories it had given him throughout his career.
“Thank you, soccer, for making me so happy,” he added.
Pedro began his senior career at Barcelona, where he developed into an important member of the club’s successful team under Pep Guardiola.
He went on to win multiple domestic and European honours with the Catalan giants before moving to Chelsea in 2015. He later continued his career in Italy with Roma and Lazio.
At international level, Pedro was part of Spain’s golden generation and represented La Roja at major tournaments, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012.
His decision brings to an end a career spanning more than 15 years at the highest level, during which he collected major trophies in Spain, England and Italy while also establishing himself as a respected figure in European football.
