The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Nigerians in the diaspora to embrace patriotism as a key factor in national development.
Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke at the 2025 Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association Abuja Iftar/Lecture Prayer on Friday, noted the role of patriotism in fostering unity and progress, both for Nigerians at home and abroad.
The event, themed “Islam and Patriotism,” was centred on how Islam encourages love for one’s country.
The chairman, in a statement signed by Gabriel Odu of the Public Relations department NiDCOM, noted that Islam places a strong emphasis on patriotism, with the Prophet Muhammad demonstrating a deep love for his homeland.
“As Muslims, patriotism is a core value embedded in our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself demonstrated a deep love for his homeland, and as Nigerians, we must embody this principle by working towards national unity, peace, and development,” she stated.
She urged Nigerians to follow this example and work toward the country’s unity, peace, and development.
The NiDCOM Chairman extended her message to Nigerians living abroad, urging them to remain committed to nation-building regardless of the distance.
She acknowledged the contributions of the diaspora in the form of remittances, investments, and knowledge transfer, noting that their involvement is crucial in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“Our brothers and sisters abroad are among Nigeria’s greatest assets. Their skills, resources, and unwavering love for the country must be harnessed to drive sustainable development.
“No matter where we are, Nigeria remains our home, and we must continue to uplift its image and contribute to its progress,” she added.
She also stressed the importance of Nigerians abroad serving as ambassadors for the country, excelling in various fields, and investing back into Nigeria.
These actions, she explained, are all ways of demonstrating true patriotism.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Sheikh Abu Mazidatul Khaer bn Saeed, who addressed the misconception that Muslims are unpatriotic. He explained that patriotism involves love and respect for one’s country and highlighted the example of the Prophet Muhammad as a model of patriotism.
The Sheikh also pointed out that patriotism goes beyond affection for one’s country and includes respect for leadership and finding ways to contribute to national development.
