The Executive Secretary of the Ekiti State Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education, Modupe Falade, has urged illiterate adults and youths in the state to enrol in literacy programmes to acquire essential reading and writing skills.
Falade, who described education as a powerful tool for socio-economic development, said quality mass education could liberate people from ignorance.
According to a statement by the agency made available in Ado Ekiti on Monday, she spoke during the graduation ceremony of 76 adult learners at the Basic Literacy Centre in Ekameta Local Council Development Area, Ikogosi-Ekiti.
She described the graduation as part of the Oyebanji administration’s efforts to promote inclusive education and extend literacy opportunities to underserved segments of the population.
Falade commended the Chairman of Ekameta LCDA, Adeniji Oluwaleye, and the council’s management for approving funds to sponsor the centre.
She urged literate residents “to encourage illiterate adults and youths, including their neighbours and relatives, to enrol in literacy programmes.”
The executive secretary also encouraged the graduands to “remain committed to learning and strive for excellence, adding that they could further their education through post-literacy classes.”
She wished them success in their future endeavours.
One of the graduands, Dorcas Akinyemi, who spoke on behalf of the others, expressed appreciation to the Ekiti State Government and the LCDA chairman for providing them with the opportunity to acquire an education.
Akinyemi said the graduands would remain committed to their academic pursuits.
Activities at the ceremony included the presentation of cash gifts by the LCDA chairman to learners who came first, second and third in academic performance.
