A series of videos capturing the state of the Nsukka Road in Enugu State following a heavy downpour on Friday has sparked concern and debate on social media.
One of the most widely circulated video clips showed commercial and private vehicles broken down on the flooded road
The video captured a scene where a state-branded commercial Coaster bus, bearing the portrait of Governor Peter Mbah, was forced to halt.
An onlooker and narrator in the video could be heard instructing the passengers to alight from the vehicle to help another motorist whose car had stopped in the middle of the road.
“Come down and walk so that you’ll tell Peter Mbah what you’re passing through on Enugu road,” the narrator said in a mix of English and Pidgin. “See vehicles that have spoilt on the road. Tell Peter Mbah to come and fix the Enugu road in Nsukka.”

“Tomorrow is here!” he added, mocking the political and development blueprint slogan of the incumbent administration, which was boldly printed on the bus.
In a separate video, a commercial motorcyclist was seen dropping off his passengers to avoid moving further on the flooded road, forcing his passengers to join other pedestrians walking on the road median.
“This is Nsukka road right now. If I’m telling people about Nsukka road, they can’t believe me. Can you see? This is Enugu road. You see that all the motors have stopped. See water everywhere,” the man filming the scene lamented.
An additional clip showed some vehicles, including private cars and buses, driving slowly in the flood, as one motorist was seen pushing his car, which seemed to have broken down in the water.
The videos have triggered reactions on X and Facebook, with users calling on residents and the state government to work on the drainage along that road.
The incident also triggered a debate over whether the flooding should be blamed on poor government execution or the nonchalant attitude of citizens dumping refuse in drainages.
IgboAngelGabriel, who tweets as #ThatEnuguDude, wrote on X, “This road has always been facing this problem for years! And you know what the actual problem is? blockage of the gutters with refuse. Nsukka people are so good at dumping refuse in the gutters.”
“Govt did solid drainage work on that axis of the road, are also meant to be cracking down people who throw dirt in that axis and also maintain the drainage. Citizens throw dirt here, making it hard for water to flow efficiently. So both Govt and citizens are to be blamed,” Tobe, identified as #OdoGeraldGiggs, supported the argument.
On Facebook, Ikenna Paul agreed, saying, “Our people dey very nonchalant…na block dem block those gutters, what do you expect?”
#Ndubuisi_23 blamed the previous administration for delivering a substandard project, writing, “If we are being honest, this road was rehabilitated by the immediate past governor of Enugu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, during his first tenure. That was barely 8 to 10 years ago. If he had done a good job, the road wouldn’t be in this shape today.”
Sam Oluka on Facebook supported this and advised critics, saying, “Don’t blame the current government; rather, your man who didn’t carry out a feasibility study on the road before reconstruction.”
However, #eric_tc24 threw the blame back to the current administration’s maintenance culture.
He wrote, “For those blaming Gburugburu, he built that road and added proper drainage to it. The drainage was clogged, and in 3 years, Peter Mbah’s government has not been able to clean it up. They’ll pull out dirt from the drainage, leave it on the road till rain falls and washes it back into the drainage.”
Amidst the debate, some users chose humour as Ugwuja Chikwado wrote on Facebook, “Everyone should buy a canoe.”
