The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with separate cases of culpable homicide, an attack on a police facility, and violent disturbances at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area of the state.
This was confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, in a statement made available to PUNCH correspondent on Monday in Dutse, the state capital.
According to the PPRO, the arrests are part of the command’s sustained efforts to maintain law and order across the state.
Speaking on the Gujungu Market unrest, Adam said, “On July 26, 2026, the command arrested two suspects in connection with the violent unrest that erupted at Gujungu Market.”
He explained that the trouble started after a fight at the market.
“The disturbance reportedly began following a misunderstanding between a soldier and one Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, 25, of Miga Local Government Area, at the market,” he stated.
The police spokesperson said the situation later escalated into violence.
“During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed Biniya with a knife, resulting in injuries from which the victim was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” the PPRO said.
He added that the chaos led to attacks on security personnel and property.
“Following the incident, some hoodlums took advantage of the situation to attack a police station, discharged bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two thatched shops ablaze within the market,” he said.
Adam said intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects.
“Through sustained intelligence-led operations, police operatives arrested two suspects believed to have actively participated in the attack, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices,” he added.
He identified the suspects as Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa Local Government Area, and Faridu Mohammed.
In a related case, the PPRO said six more suspects were arrested over an attack on vigilantes.
“In a related incident arising from the same disturbance, on August 2, 2026, six suspects were arrested for allegedly attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses.
“As a result of the assault, one vigilante member sustained fatal injuries and was certified dead by a medical doctor, while the second victim is currently responding to treatment at a medical facility,” he said.
The police also disclosed that they recovered livestock abandoned during the crisis.
“The command also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest,” Adam said.
He listed the six suspects as Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55; Yahaya Habu, 31; Ibrahim Abubakar, 30; Audu Mamman Janare, 30; Ya’u Duga, 65; and Mamman Musa, 20, all from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Jahun local government areas.
In another case, the police said they received a report of a fatal stabbing in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area.
“Today, Monday, August 3, 2026, at about 10:30hrs, the command received a report of a culpable homicide incident that occurred at Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area,” Adam stated.
Preliminary findings showed the incident followed a quarrel between two young men.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a misunderstanding between two 20-year-old youths degenerated into violence, during which one of them allegedly stabbed the other with a sharp metal object (Danbuda) in the chest,” he said.
Adam explained that the victim later died at the hospital.
“The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment.”
According to him, police acted swiftly and made an arrest.
“Acting swiftly, police operatives arrested one Saminu Ibrahim, 20, of Gidan Gona Village, Ringim Local Government Area, in connection with the incident.”
“The case is currently under investigation, after which the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, for discreet investigation. Upon completion of the investigation, the suspect will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full weight of the law,” the PPRO stated.
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Police Command said a stakeholders’ engagement involving Miyetti Allah, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, youth representatives and other relevant stakeholders is currently ongoing.
The PPRO said the meeting aims to find lasting solutions.
“The engagement is to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market incident, strengthen community cooperation, and prevent a recurrence,” he added.
“The Commissioner of Police commended the professionalism and swift response of officers and other security stakeholders in containing the disturbances,” Adam said.
The CP also assured residents of the command’s commitment to security.
“He assured residents that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to deal decisively with anyone found engaging in criminal activities,” the PPRO added.
The Jigawa State Police Command urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing investigations and enhance public safety.
