Suspected bandits on Thursday night invaded Lade community in Kakafu village, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing a vigilante commander.
The deceased, popularly known as Tetengi, was reportedly shot while defending residents during the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stormed the village under the cover of darkness, causing panic among villagers.
“We woke up to another tragedy. Our commander was shot dead while defending us,” a local resident, who pleaded anonymity, told reporters.
Tetengi’s death has thrown Patigi and the neighbouring Edu Local Government Area into mourning.
Kwara State has been grappling with recurring security threats, with rural communities often bearing the brunt of banditry and violent attacks.
