The Governing Council of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State, has ratified the promotion of five Readers to the rank of Full Professors and a Senior Lecturer to an Associate Professor.
The decision taken at the governing council’s Extraordinary meeting held on Wednesday, 15th April, 2020, according to a statement signed by the UNIMED Public Relations Officer, Isaac Oluyi, on Thursday.
The professors include Lawal Adewale Oyeneyin (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Michael Olumide Gbala (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology), and Joshua Olajire Babayemi (Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology).
Others are Edosa Samuel Uhumwangho (Department of Biochemistry) and Adegbiji Waheed Atilade (Department of Surgery). At the same time, Dr Kayode Olayiwola Adepoju of the Department of Health Information Management was promoted from the position of Senior Lecturer to Reader (Associate Professor).
Reacting to the development, UNIMED’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, described the promotions as a testament to sustained academic excellence and meaningful contributions to society.
She noted that the honourees have distinguished themselves through rigorous scholarship, impactful research, and dedicated service to both the university and the wider community.
According to her, the elevation is not only a reward for years of hard work but also an acknowledgement of the vital role the beneficiaries continue to play in advancing knowledge and strengthening the institution’s reputation.
She emphasised that their achievements reflect the university’s commitment to fostering academic distinction and innovation.
Adejuyigbe congratulated the newly promoted scholars, urging them to view the recognition as a call to greater responsibility.
She encouraged them to sustain their momentum and continue pushing the boundaries of research and professional practice.
“The university and the global community need your expertise now more than ever,” the VC stated.
The don added that their continued dedication will inspire younger academics and contribute significantly to national development.
While the promotion of the professors took retroactive effect from 1st October, 2023, that of the Reader took effect from 15th April,2026.
