The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has said the recent attempts to reverse the Professional Allowance Table pose a serious threat to the welfare of its members.

The association said such actions could negatively impact the well-being of resident doctors and further strain the healthcare system.

The association made this known after NARD leaders visited the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, for what it described as “a high-level and impactful engagement centred on the welfare of doctors across the country”.

This was contained in a statement signed by NARD’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Ibrahim, on Wednesday.

The NARD leadership, however, acknowledged recent interventions that helped to prevent the situation from escalating.

“The recent attempt to reverse PAT was not only unjust but posed a significant threat to the well-being of our members—akin to inducing avoidable distress within the system. We therefore appreciate the swift intervention that has helped avert this situation,” the statement read in part.

PUNCH Healthwise reports that the doctors had announced an indefinite nationwide strike, planned to begin at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The association cited the Federal Government’s alleged plan to halt the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table, a key component of agreements reached following its 2025 industrial action.

However, hours after the strike began, the doctors suspended the industrial action and gave the FG a two-week ultimatum to resolve outstanding welfare issues, including unpaid allowances and the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.

The decision followed high-level interventions by the Vice President, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and other well-meaning stakeholders.

But NARD, in its statement on Wednesday, called on its members to remain calm and united while the leadership continues engagements with relevant authorities.

“We urge all members to remain calm, united, and confident in the leadership of NARD. Be assured that we remain resolute, proactive, and unwavering in our commitment to defending your rights and advancing your welfare,” NARD said.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of resident doctors and improving their working conditions.

“Together, we will continue to stand, speak, and secure a better future for all resident doctors,” the association said.

The NARD leadership commended Shettima for his prompt intervention and commitment to doctors’ welfare.

“Once again, he has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the well-being of Nigerian doctors,” the association said.

It added that during the meeting, the Vice President gave an assurance that PAT would be implemented.

“PAT has come to stay. No one will reverse what has already been implemented as your legitimate, hard-earned allowances.

“All outstanding demands will be addressed promptly after the budget process, without unnecessary delays,” NARD quoted the VP as saying.
