Nigeria’s sole representatives in the CAF Champions League Rivers United suffered a painful 2-1 defeat against RS Berkane in their second game of the CAF Champions League, Soccernet.ng reports.

After falling to a 3-0 defeat against Pyramids in their first game of the competition, coach Finidi George and his boys needed a victory against RS Berkane to boost their hopes of surviving the group stages alive.

It looked like they were on course after they scored in the 37th minute, courtesy of an own goal from RS Berkane midfielder Mamadou Camara.

Finidi’s team had a very good first half and could have scored more than once, but they failed to and just dragged the 1-0 lead into halftime.

But in the second half, things changed. The Moroccan club practically played Rivers United out of the park. But the former NPFL champions held on strong.

Unfortunately, it was during stoppage time that they fell like a pack of cards.

Youngest El Kaabi scored the equalizer for RS Berkane in the 97th minute off a set piece.

Then, just a minute later, the reigning CAF Confederations Cup winners scored their second.

Rivers United’s goalkeeper tried to play a long ball into RS Berkane’s area. But it was deflected, leaving the Nigerian side exposed at the back. The Moroccan side eventually scored from that situation, courtesy of Mounir Chouair.

Watch Rivers United Lose 3 Points In Two Minutes

Following their defeat, The Pride of Rivers sit rooted to the bottom of Group A, with zero points. The competition will return in January 2026.

Rivers United’s next Champions League game is a visit to Power Dynamos of Zambia. If they drop points in that fixture, then they should kiss the Champions League goodbye.
