A fatal accident occurred yesterday at the Ijora causeway in Lagos when a 40-foot container truck overturned and crushed a commercial tricycle, killing two people instantly.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the deceased were a police officer and a female passenger. Their remains were evacuated by security operatives and family members.

Two other occupants of the tricycle, including the driver, sustained severe leg injuries and were taken to Jimsan Hospital, Ijora, by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for emergency treatment.

According to LASTMA, the crash occurred when the truck lost control while attempting to drive under the Ijora Bridge, toppling onto the tricycle.

Police operatives from nearby divisions were immediately deployed to prevent a mob from setting the truck ablaze in anger.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “deeply regrettable,” offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He commended emergency responders for their swift intervention.

He further urged truck and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise caution, particularly when navigating under bridges and in congested areas, to avoid such tragedies.
