Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is attracting attention due to his tricky contract situation at Nottingham Forest, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 28-year-old joined the Tricky Trees from Union Berlin in 2022, but he has had a rollercoaster period at the City Ground.

Although he played a key role in helping Nottingham Forest avoid relegation during his first two seasons, recurring injuries have significantly hampered his progress.

Since his transfer, the former Liverpool forward has missed 56 games for club and country, a factor that ultimately cost him his place in the starting eleven.

Unfortunately for him, the other strikers like Chris Wood and Igor Jesus have stepped up, producing goals consistently. Arnaud Kalimuendo, who just returned from his loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt is coming off a decent campaign with six goals and one assist in 19 appearances.

Heading into the new season, Nottingham Forest have a slightly bloated squad following their heavy investment to support last season’s Europa League campaign. As a result, the club will need to offload players to streamline their roster.

Why Nottingham Forest Might Sell Taiwo Awoniyi

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is among the players who could be made available for transfer this summer.

With only one year remaining on his current deal, the club has yet to start the discussions for an extension. This suggests that he may no longer be seen as an important figure in their long-term plans.

Consequently, his time at Nottingham Forest appears to be drawing to an end. If the Premier League side fail to secure an extension, they risk losing him as a free agent next summer.

However, Awoniyi would certainly not be short of suitors. Given his proven pedigree, he is expected to attract significant interest from clubs across Europe’s top five leagues.

He has previously shone at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. So some Bundesliga clubs would be willing to add him to their roster. Also, some mid-table and newly-promoted Premier League sides would be happy to have his top-flight experience.
