Super Eagles weekend recap: Osimhen, Chukwueze, Ajayi shine, Aina, & Lookman flop

All the top leagues in Europe have resumed, and Super Eagles stars have been right in the thick of the action, Soccernet.ng reports.

​With the weekend kickoff on Friday, clubs have begun slugging it out to establish early dominance in their respective leagues.

​Several Nigerian players featured for their clubs—some putting in standout shifts, while others failed to shine.

Top Super Eagles Performers

​Victor Osimhen

​Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen continued his fine start to the season on Friday, bagging two goals and an assist in Galatasaray’s 4-0 thrashing of Erzurumspor at the Kazim Karabekir Stadium.

​Osimhen looked sharp throughout. He unselfishly set up Yunus Akgun for the second goal before using his relentless pressing to force a mistake and net the third. He then capped off his performance by pouncing on a low cross from Gabriel Sara to add the fourth.

​It was a brilliant display that took his tally to four goals and an assist for the season.

​Samuel Chukwueze

​Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze provided an assist in AC Milan’s 2-1 victory over Torino in their league opener on Sunday.

​Deployed as a right wing-back during pre-season, Chukwueze retained that role in Turin and delivered an impressive display. He registered six ball recoveries, 20 carries, 69 touches, four key passes, and the assist for Adrien Rabiot’s goal, earning him the Man of the Match award. He will look to build on this strong momentum in the weeks ahead.

​Semi Ajayi

​Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi was among Nigeria’s top performers over the weekend, netting the opening goal in Hull City’s shock 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium.

​Ajayi reacted quickest to a loose ball from a set-piece, smashing home a close-range rebound in the 17th minute. Beyond the goal, he was commanding in defense, repelling wave after wave of United attacks. He finished the game with seven defensive contributions, three ball recoveries, a 100% duel success rate (3/3), and a well-deserved Man of the Match award.

​Chidera Ejuke

​Chidera Ejuke made an instant impact off the bench for Sevilla in their clash against Athletic Club at San Mamés.

​Introduced at halftime, the winger needed just five minutes to double Sevilla’s lead, executing a sublime chip over Spain’s number one, Unai Simón. The match ended 3-1, with Oso and Isaac Romero also on target for Sevilla, while Aitor Paredes grabbed a late consolation for the hosts.

Last Weekend’s Super Eagles Flops

​Ola Aina

​Super Eagles defender Ola Aina featured for Nottingham Forest in their narrow 1-0 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday.

​Aina played 74 minutes for the Tricky Trees. While Forest remained solid during his time on the pitch, he struggled to impose himself in the attacking third. Playing in a right wing-back role, his deliveries were repeatedly cleared, and he occasionally appeared unsettled in the advanced position. He will be aiming for a sharper display in the coming fixtures.

​Ademola Lookman

​Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman drew a blank in Atlético Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday.

​Leading the line for Los Colchoneros amid uncertainty surrounding Julián Álvarez, Lookman struggled to get involved, managing just one off-target attempt in his 79 minutes on the pitch. It was a subdued outing for the forward, who will be eager to bounce back when Atlético take on Sevilla next weekend.

​Wilfred Ndidi

​Wilfred Ndidi made his first start of the season for Beşiktaş in their away clash against Alanyaspor at the Alanya Oba Stadium.

​The midfielder completed the full 90 minutes in a match dominated by the visitors. However, Beşiktaş failed to convert their possession into clear-cut chances and were ultimately punished, falling to a 1-0 defeat.
