Beating Tanzania twice in November keeps the Super Eagles alive in AFCON 2027 qualifying, but the Group L tie-break rules point to March as the real decider.
Tanzania are co-hosts of the 2027 finals and have qualified automatically. That leaves one place in Group L for the highest-ranked of Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar, as Afrik-Foot explained in September.
Nigeria are second in the group, three points behind leaders Guinea-Bissau after two matches, according to Legit.ng in mid-October. Our Group L table piece tracks the gap.
How the Group L tie-break works
If teams finish level on points, the first test is the results between the teams concerned. Overall group goal difference comes next, then total goals scored.
The calendar after Tanzania
The Super Eagles play Tanzania twice in the November window. They then have two games left in the March 2027 window: away to Madagascar and at home to Guinea-Bissau, according to Naijasabi.
Whatever happens in Uyo and Dar es Salaam, the table will still have to be settled against the two rivals. For the Tanzania games themselves, see our preview piece on the Super Eagles.
Analysis: Why the March games carry the weight
Two wins over Tanzania would lift Nigeria to nine points, but they would not change any result against Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau. If Nigeria finish level with either rival, those head-to-head results would be looked at before goal difference.
That makes the home game against Guinea-Bissau in March the likeliest swing fixture if the race stays tight. Nigeria cannot control what the other two do against each other, so maximum points in November is the only part of the equation fully in their hands.
Nigeria’s November job is simple: win both games against Tanzania and arrive in March still in the race.
