Tanzania are due to arrive in Uyo on Sunday 8 November, five days before their AFCON 2027 qualifier against the Super Eagles, while many of Eric Chelle’s Europe-based players will join only after their weekend club games.
Nigeria play the Taifa Stars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday 13 November, with the return in Dar es Salaam on 17 November. Nigeria have three points from two Group L games and trail leaders Guinea-Bissau, who have six, after a 3-0 defeat in Bissau in September.
Tanzania have yet to win in the group, with a 2-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau and a 1-1 draw with Madagascar. As co-hosts with Kenya and Uganda, they have already qualified for AFCON 2027, as Afrik-Foot noted.
Tanzania’s squad and plan
Coach Miguel Gamondi has named 24 players, 12 based at home and 12 abroad. Afrik-Foot reported that he wants his side to press, keep possession and attack rather than only defend.
Our report on the Tanzania squad for the Uyo and Dar games has the full picture of who Gamondi has called up.
Analysis: Who gains from the early arrival?
Preparation time is the part of this fixture Nigeria cannot fully control. If the Europe-based players arrive after their weekend matches, Chelle will have a short window to work on shape, and the Super Eagles have gone five games without a clean sheet.
Tanzania, with half their squad home-based and in Uyo early, can use the extra days to settle in and train together. That does not make them favourites, but it removes any easy argument that the visitors will be unprepared.
The stakes stay the same for Nigeria. As we set out in why March may decide Group L, the Super Eagles need results in both games, and a clean sheet in Uyo on 13 November would be the clearest sign that the short preparation has not cost them.
