Super Eagles and Alverca defender Isaac James has revealed his biggest ambition after receiving his maiden invitation to the Nigerian National team, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 22-year-old was handed his first senior Nigeria call-up by coach Eric Chelle for the opening 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The defender’s invitation came after an impressive start to the 2026/27 season with Portuguese side Alverca, where he established himself as a regular starter.
James started all seven of Alverca’s Primeira Liga matches before the September international break, providing two assists.

His versatility has also strengthened his case, with the Nigerian capable of operating at left-back, left midfield and left-sided centre-back.
Isaac James dreams of playing at AFCON
After achieving one of the biggest milestones of his young career by earning a first Super Eagles invitation, James has already set his sights on an even bigger target.
The Alverca defender wants to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations. James told Footy-Africa that playing at the continental tournament is one of the ambitions driving him as he begins his senior international career.
The 22-year-old’s immediate focus, however, is on establishing himself within Chelle’s squad and making the most of every opportunity that comes his way. His first invitation was already an emotional moment.
“I was doing well in the season, you know, but I didn’t expect to get a call-up immediately because I know it’s my dream to be here,” the former Lorient defender said.
“So when the coach called me, I was so surprised because I didn’t expect it to be so soon. But I’m really happy to be here. For me, I actually cried. I can’t lie because I’ve been dreaming, you know, to play in the national team.
“One of my dreams is to play at the FIFA World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations and in the Champions League.”
The defender now wants to turn that first invitation into a long-term place in the Super Eagles squad.

James has already impressed at Alverca
James’ call-up was not based on potential. The former Lorient full-back had started the new season strongly in Portugal, starting seven Primeira Liga matches before joining up with Nigeria.
His versatility has also been a useful tool for Alverca. James started as a left midfielder against Porto and Braga, played defensive midfield against Estrela and operated as a centre-back in matches against Sporting, Santa Clara and Nacional.
Although his primary position is left-back, the ability to perform in several roles gives Chelle another option on the left side of the team.
James was brought into a squad containing established defenders such as Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey and Bruno Onyemaechi, with the youngster hoping to prove that he belongs at international level.

Aina has already welcomed the competition, telling Soccernet.ng that James and the other new players had earned their places.
“I spoke to Isaac James; it’s good to have new faces, new young talent pushing the country forward,” Aina said.
“Everyone is here for a reason; it’s not a charity case. If you’re picked for the Nigerian national team, it’s a privilege; it means you’re doing something right.”
Super Eagles dream could become AFCON reality
James’ first challenge is to establish himself with Nigeria, but his ambition now goes beyond simply earning a debut.
The Super Eagles are targeting qualification for the 2027 AFCON, which will be staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Chelle has already shown a willingness to introduce younger players into his squad, with Moses Usor and George Ilenikhena among the players handed their debut in the past week.

James now has an opportunity to turn his strong club form into international progress. The defender’s versatility, pace and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch could give him another route into Chelle’s plans.
For a player who only recently admitted that he cried after receiving his first Nigeria invitation, the next dream is clear: make the Super Eagles squad and eventually walk onto the pitch at the Africa Cup of Nations.
