Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle has delivered his verdict on his team following their shaky 2-1 win over Madagascar in their opening game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.
The three-time African champions were favourites to claim all three points from the encounter, but they were pegged back after 16 minutes courtesy of a goal from Ehsan Kari.
However, the team showed character to bounce back. Interestingly, it was two debutants who did the damage for Nigeria. George Ilenikhena equalised just before the halftime break.

Then, Moses Usor, who replaced Samuel Chukwueze in the 61st minute, showed class by scoring a beautiful goal just four minutes after his introduction.
The Super Eagles could easily have scored four or five on the night, but poor finishing was their bane. Nonetheless, the three points were key, as the win keeps them level with Guinea-Bissau, who beat Tanzania in their own opening fixture.

For Éric Chelle, the win is a relief. This is a new football cycle, and avoiding a poor start is vital for the team to continue building confidence.
It also ensured that Nigeria remains in contention for top spot in the group, where only one qualification slot is available due to the presence of co-hosts Tanzania, who are already guaranteed a berth.
Following the game, coach Chelle expressed satisfaction with the result. He admitted that the performance could have been better, but he was pleased with the players’ mentality and temperament.
”This game was not bad, but not good either. We made the first mistake, and that was why we conceded,” Chelle said.
”After that, we had a lot of chances to score, but because technically we were not very sharp, we could not convert them.
”At the end of the day, though, the mindset was right. They gave everything for the shirt, for the country. I was also very happy that Victor (Osimhen) was here. It shows that this group is trying to move forward and build something new. I am very proud of the team’s spirit.”

Although he was not available for selection, Galatasaray star Osimhen was spotted with his teammates after the game, having arrived to cheer them on.
In the meantime, Nigeria must now turn their focus to the next task: travelling to face group leaders Guinea-Bissau, where they will aim to secure back-to-back victories.
