New Super Eagles star Emmanuel Fernandez was playing in England with Peterborough United after being released by Gillingham and spending time in non-league football with Ramsgate and Barnet.
On Friday, the 24-year-old made his international debut for Nigeria in a 2-1 win over Iran, and he did so as a player reportedly valued at up to €40 million by his club Rangers, with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich all circling ahead of the summer transfer window.
It is one of the most dramatic rises in recent football memory, and it has happened almost entirely in the space of a single season.

How Emmanuel Fernandez moved from non-league to Ibrox
Fernandez’s early career gave few hints of what was to come. Born in London to Nigerian parents, he came through Brentford’s academy before being released without making a first-team appearance.
Spells at Gillingham, Sheppey United, Margate, and Ramsgate followed — the kind of non-league circuit that most players never escape from.
He signed with Peterborough United in July 2021, but opportunities were scarce. A loan to Spalding United produced just one appearance.
A more productive spell at Barnet in 2023 gave him regular minutes, and he returned to Peterborough to make 42 appearances in the 2023/24 League One season, winning the EFL Trophy along the way.
That performance was sufficient to attract the attention of Rangers. In July 2025, he moved to Ibrox for a reported fee of around £3.5 million on a four-year deal.

Even Fernandez seemed surprised by the step up, admitting upon signing that he had never played at that level before.
What followed stunned everyone. In 27 appearances for Danny Rohl’s team, Fernandez has scored six goals—an extraordinary return for a centerback—while averaging a FotMob rating of 7.69 in the Scottish Premiership.
His combination of physicality at 6ft 5in, aerial dominance (winning 77 per cent of aerial duels), and composure on the ball has turned him into one of the most talked-about defenders in European football.
What comes next for the Super Eagles player
The transfer noise is only getting louder. Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed in January that his club inserted a sell-on clause in the deal that took Fernandez to Rangers, and he expects to benefit handsomely.
Rangers have reportedly placed a £35 million asking price on the defender, though some analysts believe the final figure may settle lower.

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson initially expressed uncertainty about Fernandez’s arrival, but he has since become thoroughly convinced.
The Super Eagles will not be at the 2026 World Cup, meaning Fernandez won’t get the global stage that typically inflates a player’s value.
But for Eric Chelle’s rebuild, having a centre-back of this calibre commit to the green and white jersey is a significant win.
