As a result, Nottingham Forest’s players and coaching staff bade him an emotional farewell with a guard of honour before their pre-season friendly against Brest on Sunday. They even gave him the bumps, while fans at the City Ground treated him to a standing ovation.

The transfer was officially confirmed and announced by both clubs on Monday evening.

Coventry City welcomed the Nigerian forward with a striking 22-second announcement video. In the clip, Awoniyi stands in front of a dark backdrop framed by a flowing Nigerian flag before delivering the iconic line: “Super Eagles don land, it had to be Cov.”

What Awoniyi Said After Joining Coventry City

Awoniyi joins Coventry in a deal worth €10.5 million, and he will be looking to play a key role for the club next season.

This is an exciting new challenge for the Nigerian striker, and with his quality, he can deliver so long as his teammates match his level.

Speaking after his move, Awoniyi expressed his enthusiasm for his new surroundings and meeting his teammates.

“I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City,” Awoniyi said, per the club’s website.

“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they were last season, coming up from the Championship, and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new campaign.”

Awoniyi’s first task with his new club is the Premier League opener against defending champions Arsenal. The Nigerian striker boasts a strong record against the Gunners, having scored three goals in six appearances against them.

Awoniyi is fit and ready to go, having participated in Nottingham Forest’s pre-season. Consequently, coach Frank Lampard will likely throw him straight into the starting lineup, especially given his impressive history against Arsenal.
