A male pedestrian died on Sunday following a hit-and-run incident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, immediately after the Ogudu flyover bridge toward Ifako. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) intervened to apprehend the driver involved.

According to LASTMA, the driver of a Nissan Jeep, with registration number KJA 354 ET, attempted to overtake a heavily loaded forty-foot articulated container truck at high speed when he lost control. The vehicle collided with a pedestrian before veering into the central median of the expressway.

Rather than providing assistance, the driver attempted to flee the scene. LASTMA officers stationed along the corridor intercepted and detained the motorist while facilitating the rescue and medical evacuation of the pedestrian, who later died at a nearby hospital.

In a statement, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the suspect was handed over to the Ogudu Police Division, whose personnel supported the rescue operations. The mangled vehicle was also removed and taken to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation.

The accident occurred close to ongoing rehabilitation works at the Ogudu–Ifako bridge intersections, but LASTMA officers managed to maintain traffic flow and prevent secondary incidents or congestion.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stressed the dangers of excessive speeding, reckless overtaking, and hazardous driving, warning that such behaviour poses threats to both drivers and pedestrians.

He urged motorists to exercise caution and ensure road safety before attempting any overtaking or diversionary manoeuvre.

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring order across Lagos State’s highways.
