Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, has expressed concern over the rising trend of the “informant syndrome,” where individuals aid criminal activities for small sums of money.
He noted that unemployment has played a significant role in the problem and pledged to continue introducing measures to engage youth so they can become productive members of society.
Aliyu made this statement during the inauguration of a committee tasked with overseeing the recruitment of 3,000 workers into the State Civil Service. The initiative aims to reduce high unemployment rates and youth restiveness, which often drive young people towards social vices.
The governor emphasised his administration’s commitment to making Sokoto’s youth more productive and to ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
Since the beginning of his administration, thousands of youth and women have benefitted from various skills acquisition programmes through the Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs, Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, as well as numerous poverty reduction initiatives.
These programmes cover trades such as vulcanising, plumbing, electrical work, knitting, sewing, pomade and perfume making, and make-up. Participants also received working tools and start-up capital.
Thanking the people of Sokoto State for their continued support, Governor Aliyu reassured them of his administration’s dedication to the welfare of all citizens.
He instructed members of the committee to prioritise unemployed graduates with qualifications such as the National Certificate of Education (NCE), Higher National Diploma (HND), and university degrees. Recruitment will be conducted across all 23 local councils of the state, with emphasis on areas with manpower shortages.
The committee was urged to carry out its duties diligently, justly, and fairly, ensuring that only qualified candidates who can add value to the civil service are recruited.
Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Jelani Kalgo, praised Governor Aliyu for addressing the manpower needs of the State Civil Service. He promised that the committee would adhere to the guidelines and meet the expectations of the people of Sokoto State.
