The Edo State Special Security Squad has dismantled five suspected kidnappers’ camps in Owan East Local Government Area following an extensive bush-combing operation in Ekeke Erah Forest.
A member of the squad, Eribo Ewanta, confirmed the development in a statement released on Saturday by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Ewanta said the operation was coordinated by the governor’s Principal Security Officer in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, local vigilantes, and other security agencies.
“Operatives trekked nearly five kilometres deep into the forest, between Afuze and Ora, where the camps were uncovered and destroyed,” he said.
He disclosed that signs of recent activity were discovered at the sites, including fire still burning and food left cooking, indicating the camps were still in use.
Ewanta added that the operation escalated into a gun battle at a riverbank as suspected kidnappers, apparently alerted to the security raid, attempted to escape.
“Evidence of cattle grazing in the forest further raised suspicion that the hideouts may have been linked to armed herdsmen,” he said.
“Although the suspects escaped deeper into the forest, we are on their trail. Edo State will no longer provide a safe haven for criminal elements.”
He assured residents that the operation was part of a sustained security campaign to rid the state of kidnappers and violent groups.
“The governor’s directive is clear: Edo must be free of criminal elements. We will pursue them relentlessly until they are apprehended,” Ewanta stated.
He commended Governor Okpebholo’s security strategy, noting that it was restoring public confidence and sending a strong warning to criminal networks.
