As the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage reaches its climax, the highly anticipated Group K showdown between Portugal and Colombia has been confirmed as the most sought-after match of the opening phase, with staggering ticket demand underscoring its global appeal.
According to TNT Sports and The Athletic, the blockbuster fixture scheduled for Saturday evening at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, drew over five million ticket requests within the first 24 hours of availability.
TNT Sports highlighted the scale of demand in its coverage on Saturday, stating that Portugal versus Colombia is “reportedly the most in-demand group stage match at the World Cup, with resale tickets at over $7,000.”
Resale prices also skyrocketed, with some tickets reportedly changing hands for more than $7,000, a figure that surpasses average get-in prices for major events like the Super Bowl.
The Athletic’s report, published in The New York Times, corroborated the frenzy, citing sources that the Group K match was the most wanted ticket of all 72 group-stage games.
It noted that even Portugal coach Roberto Martinez had to secure tickets early for his family.
“Well, it means I had to buy tickets for my family in November. That’s what it means,” Martinez was quoted as saying during a pre-match conference. “Because I knew it was going to be difficult to get tickets.”
The clash pits two football powerhouses against each other in what many are calling a de facto knockout encounter.
Portugal, featuring the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo, comes into the match with four points from two games, including a dominant 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, where the five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored twice. Colombia, meanwhile, have enjoyed a strong campaign, sitting atop the group with maximum points.
The fixture’s allure stems from several factors, as it marks a rare meeting between the two nations, features star-studded squads with Ronaldo, Luis Diaz, and others, and is hosted in a vibrant, football-mad city with large diaspora communities from both countries.
The match is expected to draw a raucous crowd and decide the group standings heading into the Round of 32.
Social media has been abuzz with reactions to the ticket frenzy as fans echoed the excitement and frustration.
While major platforms list premium seats between $6,000 and $7,000, some individual sellers on X (formerly Twitter) are offering late tier listings ranging from $470 to $600 to cash out on the overwhelming demand.
Others took to resale offers, with users like #vcavj9y7jh55791 advertising tickets at $600 each and #chrisgesell seeking buyers for seats at $470 apiece, reflecting the heated secondary market.
For international fans, including the Nigerian audience and the broader African diaspora in the United States, the game also carries added intrigue given the presence of several African teams progressing strongly in the competition.
Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm local time, 12:30 am Nigerian time, on Sunday. With both sides boasting attacking talent and defensive solidity, the encounter could produce one of the tournament’s memorable moments.
