The Portuguese Football Federation has confirmed plans to organise a special farewell for Cristiano Ronaldo following the announcement of his retirement from international football.

The federation paid tribute to the legendary forward, reaffirming his special place in Portuguese football and assuring him that he would always be welcomed back.

“This will always be your home,” the FPF said in a statement on its X handle on Thursday expressing its appreciation for Ronaldo’s contributions to the national team over the years.

The planned farewell will recognise a remarkable international career during which Ronaldo established himself as Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most influential players in the country’s football history.

Ronaldo, 41, ends his international journey with an extraordinary record of 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, making him the highest goalscorer in men’s international football.

His international career included several historic achievements, most notably leading Portugal to their first-ever European Championship title in 2016.

He also captained the national team to victory in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 and the 2025 edition of the competition.

Beyond the trophies, Ronaldo’s commitment to Portugal helped establish a new era for the national team, inspiring generations of footballers and supporters.

His departure from international football marks the end of a remarkable chapter that began with his senior debut in 2003.

Although he will no longer represent Portugal on the international stage, Ronaldo is expected to continue his professional career with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

He also remains focused on reaching 1,000 official career goals, having scored 985 according to the figures reported in the latest account of his career.

The FPF’s planned farewell will provide an opportunity for Portugal to celebrate a player whose achievements have become an important part of the country’s sporting history.

With its message, “This will always be your home,” the federation has made clear that Ronaldo’s relationship with Portugal will remain special even after his international retirement.
