Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have foiled an armed robbery attack in Owerri, the capital city.
Consequently, a yet-to-be-disclosed number of suspects were arrested, and a locally made pistol, a pump action gun and seven rounds of live cartridges were recovered from them.
These were disclosed on Monday morning by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye.
Okoye, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), informed that following a distressed call received by the command on an armed robbery incident at Bishop’s Court, behind the Imo State University, Owerri, some operatives were deployed in the scene, which led to the arrest of one Ernest Nweke, of Umuoji in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the state, but resident in World Bank, Owerri, and a locally made pistol recovered from him.
He said the same day, a three-man gang was reportedly attacking people at that location, leading to the arrest of an unnamed suspect, while others disappeared.
He said interrogation of the arrested suspect led to the arrest of others, informing that a search at a location resulted in the recovery of one pump-action gun and seven rounds of live cartridges.
Okoye said that the suspects would be arraigned in court soon, following the completion of investigations.
The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, commended the residents who reported the scenes to the command, promising further cooperation with the public.
“The Imo State Police Command commends residents for promptly reporting incidents and reiterates that community-police cooperation remains key to crime prevention. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency number: 0803 477 3600,” Okoye said.
