The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed as false a social media report alleging that Christian children rescued from kidnappers were placed in a Muslim-run orphanage in Birnin Kebbi.
In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, described the report as “baseless” and a deliberate attempt to discredit the command.
According to him, the publication, allegedly written by a corps member, claimed that a four-year-old boy named Uzochukwu had been found in the orphanage. The boy was said to have told how policemen arrested his kidnappers, charged them to court, and later kept him and other Christian children in the facility.
“The command categorically refutes the publication, condemning it as a mischievous narrative calculated to undermine the integrity, unwavering commitment and professionalism of officers in their relentless efforts to combat crimes and criminality in Kebbi State,” Abubakar stated.
He urged members of the public to disregard the allegation, warning against the circulation of rumours capable of causing mistrust and disaffection in society.
Abubakar also reaffirmed the police’s readiness to collaborate with credible media professionals in sensitising the public on security activities and curbing the spread of fake news.
