The Community for Sexual Abuse Prevention, Advocacy and Response, in collaboration with the Jaytee Fayemi Foundation, has organised a sexual abuse seminar and menstrual education outreach for women and girls displaced by the Yelewata massacre in Benue State.
The programme, which was held on Saturday at the International Market IDP Camp in Makurdi, reached over 1,500 women and girls with training on sexual violence prevention, rights awareness, and menstrual health.
According to the organisers, the initiative is part of SPAR Community’s ongoing efforts to reach vulnerable groups with appropriate sex education and practical knowledge to protect them from abuse.
Speaking at the event, the group explained that the seminar was held shortly after its Break the Cycle Campaign, which focused on raising awareness about sexual abuse across the country.
“We saw the need to continue the conversation, especially with survivors who are rebuilding their lives under very difficult circumstances,” SPAR Community said in a statement.
The sessions covered understanding sexual abuse, knowing personal rights, and creating safe spaces for healing and recovery.
Alongside these discussions, participants were also educated on menstrual hygiene practices to improve their overall health and well-being.
As part of the outreach, sanitary pads were distributed to all 1,500 women and girls present at the camp, an intervention the organisers described as a small but significant way of meeting the needs of displaced women who often lack basic supplies.
Founder of SPAR Community, Peace Agada, noted that the organisation remains committed to creating safe spaces for children and young people by equipping them with age-appropriate information and responding to survivors with compassion.
She added that SPAR Community pledges to continue supporting vulnerable groups and survivors, ensuring they have the knowledge, tools, and support to live safe and healthy lives.
