The Nigerian Navy has dismissed viral social media claims linking the death of a female rating to alleged punishment ordered by a senior female officer, describing the reports as false and misleading.

In a statement on Tuesday issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Navy said it was aware of the growing public concern surrounding the death of the female personnel and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.

“The Nigerian Navy has noted with concern the circulation of false and misleading claims regarding the unfortunate death of a female rating, allegedly linked to the actions of a female lieutenant commander,” the statement said.

The Navy expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, while assuring that the matter would be handled professionally and with sensitivity.

“The Nigerian Navy extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time,” Folorunsho stated.

The reaction follows widespread outrage on social media over reports surrounding the death of a female Warrant Officer said to have died on May 20, 2026, at the Nigerian Navy Sick Bay in Gowon Estate, Ipaja, Lagos.

According to claims circulated online, the officer had reportedly been absent from duty a day earlier due to illness and was allegedly punished after reporting back to work despite explaining that she was unwell.

The viral accounts alleged that she was ordered to carry out fatigue duties under the sun, became weak during the exercise, and was later locked in a ward without immediate medical attention before her death.

The Navy, however, maintained that the established facts and actual cause of death would be communicated to the deceased’s family, while stressing the need to respect medical confidentiality.

“The established facts surrounding the incident and the underlying cause of death will be communicated to the family, while remaining sensitive to the confidential nature of medical matters,” the statement added.

The Navy also appealed for restraint from the public as discussions over the incident continue online.

“We urge the public to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information and to respect the privacy of the bereaved family so they grieve in peace,” Folorunsho said.

The incident has continued to generate reactions online, with calls for transparency and accountability over the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
