Nigeria’s push to convince Italy youth international Michael Kayode to switch international allegiance has gathered pace, Soccernet.ng reports.

According to ViolaNews, top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation are preparing a direct meeting with the defender after receiving approval from head coach Eric Chelle.

The 21-year-old Brentford full-back has emerged as one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe. His rapid development in the Premier League has been noteworthy and Nigeria are keen to act before Italy secure his long-term international future.

Reports indicate that officials from the Nigeria Football Federation are planning talks with Kayode to present a clear pathway into the Super Eagles squad. The move comes at a crucial time, as Kayode is yet to make a senior appearance for Italy national team, despite being involved at youth level.

Kayode has previously represented Italy at U18, U19, and U21 levels, and he has openly stated that playing for Italy remains his ‘primary ambition.’ However, his omission from the senior squad by head coach Gennaro Gattuso during the March 2026 World Cup play-offs has created a window of opportunity for Nigeria.

While his chances of switching allegiance remain slim for now, Nigeria believe the situation is still fluid. The defender’s heritage, both his parents are Nigerian, gives him the option to represent the Super Eagles, and officials hope a face-to-face meeting could influence his decision.

Michael Kayode: A career shaped by Italy, watched closely by Nigeria

Michael Kayode’s journey in football has been both fast and impressive. After spending several years in the academy of Juventus, he made the bold decision to step down to Serie D with Gozzano during the 2020–21 season. That move proved crucial, giving him regular playing time and helping him develop physically and tactically.

His performances earned him a transfer to ACF Fiorentina, where he quickly stood out in the club’s youth system. Kayode helped the Primavera side win key trophies and announced himself on the international stage in 2023 when he scored the winning goal for Italy in the UEFA U19 European Championship final.

That moment cemented his reputation as one of Italy’s brightest prospects. He soon broke into Fiorentina’s senior team, becoming a regular in Serie A and gaining valuable European experience, including a run to the UEFA Conference League final.

His move to Brentford in 2025 marked another important step. Initially joining on loan before making the switch permanent, Kayode has since become a key figure under manager Thomas Frank. This season alone, he has made around 30 league appearances, contributing to multiple clean sheets while also offering an attacking threat with his powerful long throw-ins.

Despite his strong ties to Italy’s football system, Kayode has acknowledged his Nigerian roots and the support he receives from fans in the country. That connection is one of the reasons Nigeria remain hopeful.
