The Anambra State Police Command said it has directed a mental evaluation for a 28-year-old man who attempted to take his own life by climbing a power transmission high-tension pole in the Awada area of the state.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Wednesday, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.
Ikenga noted that upon receipt of the information, police operatives mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area, and persuaded the victim.
He stated, “Anambra State Police operatives attached to the Awada Division, in the evening of 2nd September 2025, successfully rescued a man who attempted to commit suicide by climbing a power transmission high-tension pole situated behind Grace of God Mission, off NEPA Road, Awada.
“Upon receiving the distress information, the operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area to prevent danger, and controlled the large crowd that had gathered.
“After several minutes of persuasion by the police and some concerned public members, the man climbed down safely. He was immediately taken into protective custody at the station.”
The PPRO continued that following the successful rescue of the victim, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, directed a mental evaluation for the victim while assuring him of his support.
“In view of the above, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that the victim should undergo proper medical and mental health evaluation.
“He further assured that the command will provide the necessary support to ensure the victim’s well-being.
“The command appeals to members of the public to always seek lawful and peaceful solutions to personal challenges, and to reach out to family, friends, or relevant support groups in times of distress,” Ikenga concluded.
PUNCH Metro reported in September 2024 that the Lagos State Police Command rescued a 65-year-old visually impaired man after attempting to commit suicide by jumping into the lagoon along the Third Mainland Bridge.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, had confirmed to PUNCH Metro that the victim brought his two children to the bridge, planning to end his life, believing that the government would care for them after his death.
