Madagascar squad: Martins set to spring surprise on Super Eagles this week

Madagascar head coach Corentin Martins is set to name two experienced Europe-based players in his squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Super Eagles and Tanzania, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Barea squad is expected to be officially announced on Thursday, September 17, with a source close to the Malagasy Football Federation confirming that the two players could make their international debuts in the upcoming qualifiers.

According to Madagascar-based news platform 2424.mg, the two players have been approached by the national team for some time and have now responded positively to the call-up.

Their identities have not been disclosed, but the source described them as experienced players currently playing in Europe’s top divisions.

“Our objective is qualification for the next AFCON. That is why we have called up two experienced players,” the source told 2424.mg.

The expected additions come as Martins looks to strengthen his squad ahead of a difficult start to the qualifying campaign.

Martins’ men will travel to Nigeria to face the 2013 AFCON Champions on September 25 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The Barea will then face Tanzania four days later in their second qualifying fixture, with the match taking place at the Stade d’Honneur in Meknes, Morocco, after the 2015 COSAFA bronze medalist was unable to secure approval for its home venue.

The Malagasy side will be aiming to make a strong start to the campaign, with Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the tournament’s co-hosts.

Madagascar, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are therefore expected to battle for the remaining qualification place from the group.

Martins’ final squad announcement on September 17 could provide further clues about his plans for the crucial trip to Nigeria, particularly with the arrival of two experienced Europe-based players potentially adding quality to the Barea squad.

The Super Eagles will host the Southern Africa side in their opening qualifier before Nigeria faces Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania later in the qualification campaign.
