The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has recorded a series of emergency operations across the state, including road accidents, truck breakdowns and a fire outbreak, between Friday and Sunday.
The agency disclosed this in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, on Sunday.
According to the statement, the agency carried out several interventions across Lagos during the period, deploying emergency response teams, paramedics and heavy-duty equipment to manage incidents and restore affected roadways.
The statement said the agency responded to a distress call at 8:41am on Friday concerning a containerised truck conveying a 40ft container at Palm Avenue Bus Stop, inward Oye.
The truck had reportedly developed a mechanical fault and become immobile, obstructing vehicular movement.
“The Eagle Team professionally managed traffic and diverted oncoming vehicles to prevent secondary incidents while awaiting the Agency’s heavy-duty equipment,” the statement said.
It added that the arrival of the agency’s Super Metro enabled the broken-down truck to be recovered and moved to a nearby lay-by, restoring traffic flow.
Later that evening, the Alpha Eagle Team responded to another containerised truck incident at Ojuwoye Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, after a distress call was received at 7:24pm.
The truck had suffered an electrical fault, prompting the team to secure the scene and manage traffic while arrangements were made for its recovery.
“With the aid of the Super Metro, the truck was recovered and moved to a safe location, ensuring unhindered vehicular movement along the corridor,” the statement said.
On Saturday, the agency responded to a road traffic accident at Otedola, Mobil inward Berger, involving a Ford Escape SUV and a moving truck.
The agency said its Tiger Squad from C3 arrived at about 6:07am and found that the SUV had rammed into the truck from behind.
The crash left the male driver and female passenger of the SUV injured.
“The Agency’s Paramedics, in collaboration with LASAMBUS, promptly administered first aid and provided immediate pre-hospital care before transporting the casualties to the Trauma Centre for further medical treatment,” the statement said.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA and the Nigeria Police Force also responded to the scene, while the affected vehicles were subsequently moved to Isheri Police Station for further action.
The agency said it also recovered a containerised truck that became immobile following a mechanical fault at Olorunshogo Bus Stop, inward Cappa, on Friday evening.
“The vehicle was recovered with the aid of the Super Metro and relocated to a layby,” the statement said.
Another truck conveying interlocks also broke down at Ojuwoye in the early hours of Sunday and was subsequently recovered, according to the agency.
In a separate incident on Sunday, the Tiger Team responded to a fire outbreak at Bakare Street, Ojodu Berger.
The agency said three of eight shops stocked with foodstuffs and frozen foods had been affected by the fire, which was allegedly caused by an electrical surge following power restoration.
“The swift and professional intervention of the Tiger Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully contained the inferno, prevented it from spreading to other shops, and completely extinguished the fire,” the statement said.
Fortunately, no loss of life was recorded in the incident.
Also on Sunday, LASEMA responded to an incident involving a 40ft loaded container at Shoprite, inward Governor’s Road.
The container reportedly detached from the turntable of a Sinotruk head and fell with its flatbed, fully obstructing a lane.
“The response team immediately secured the scene and implemented traffic management measures,” the statement said.
The agency said a multi-agency operation involving its Lowbed, a private tow truck, an empty Sinotruk for transloading and a private forklift was subsequently deployed.
“The Peak Milk products contained therein were successfully transloaded, the affected truck head was towed to the LASTMA yard and the flatbed was uprighted and recovered to a nearby layby,” it said.
The agency added that the roadway was subsequently cleared and reopened for vehicular movement.
LASEMA also provided technical support for the safe installation of a billboard at Fagba Bus Stop, inward Iju, on Saturday evening.
The agency said its Hiab equipment was deployed for the operation, which was successfully completed.
Giving an update on the various interventions, Oke-Osanyintolu said all operations had been concluded and the affected roads restored.
“All operations have been concluded, affected roadways have been restored and response teams have returned to base in good condition,” he said.
The permanent secretary said the agency remained committed to responding to emergencies across Lagos.
“The Agency reassures Lagosians of its continued readiness for prompt and professional emergency response at all times,” he said.
He urged road users to comply with safety regulations, maintain their vehicles properly and exercise caution while driving.
