The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed off two facilities in Victoria Island and Lekki Phase I over alleged environmental violations involving improper wastewater disposal.

The affected facilities are the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island and Foodies Restaurant on Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Eti-Osa.

The enforcement exercise, carried out on Tuesday, according to a post obtained from the Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday.

He said the enforcement was part of ongoing efforts by the agency to curb environmental pollution and ensure compliance with wastewater regulations across the state.

According to LSWMO, Balmoral Convention Centre was sealed for the “indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the public drain” through pumping equipment, as well as wastewater overflow from a blocked sewage chamber, which reportedly caused foul odour and public nuisance in the area.

The agency also said Foodies Restaurant was shut down for discharging untreated wastewater containing high levels of fat and oil into public drains, leading to blockage of drainage channels and environmental pollution.

LSWMO officials stated that both facilities had previously been issued warnings but failed to comply with required environmental standards.

A government official said enforcement action became necessary to protect public health and maintain sanitation standards.

“The discharge of untreated wastewater into public drains poses serious environmental and health risks to residents,” the agency said.

The Lagos State Government reiterated that all residents, businesses, and property managers must adhere strictly to wastewater management guidelines or face sanctions.

“Any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws,” LSWMO warned.

The agency added that monitoring and enforcement operations will continue across the state as part of efforts to improve urban sanitation and reduce drain blockage and pollution
